Rite of Election

In the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, during the first weekend of Lent, adult and child catechumens who have been discerned ready to receive the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil are invited to participate in the Rite of Election. Bishop Knestout celebrates the rite with the newly Elect in each of the three vicariates. If you are the RCIA Leader in your parish, please contact us so that we send you the email announcements.

How do we “discern readiness” in our catechumens?

RCIA text paragraph 75 outlines the primary “content” of the catechumenate, which we can also use as guideposts for discerning readiness. The main goal is conversion; not just wanting to “be Catholic,” but to living a life of Christian discipleship within the Catholic Church.

We also know that discipleship can manifest differently in the life of each person. For this reason, it is critical that not just one person is “responsible” for discerning readiness of the catechumen(s) for initiation. Sponsors, parish community, fellow RCIA team members and the catechumen themselves are included in this process.
