In compliance with the Charter for the Protection of Children/Young People and in the effort to prevent sexual misconduct and/or child abuse, all representatives of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond—all clergy, deacons, employees of any parish, diocesan school or diocesan office–regardless of contact with children must complete a background check. Additionally, any volunteer in a ministry with direct contact with children must complete a background check.
Clergy and employees are required to complete their background screening on or before the first day of employment or service. Volunteers complete their background screening application as a part of registering for their VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children training.
Background Screening Volunteers
- Volunteer background screenings are completed via the VIRTUS system. After registering for a VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children for Adults training session, volunteers will be prompted to complete a background screening application in ScreeningOne.
- During the registration process new registrants are required to acknowledge the Diocesan Code of Ethical Conduct, Diocesan Safe Environment Regulations and the Digital Communications and Media Policy.
- Background checks are renewed through the VIRTUS system every 5 years.
Background Screening Clergy and Religious
- Background screenings for all clergy and religious are managed by the Office of Human Resources.
- All clergy and religious are required to acknowledge the Diocesan Code of Ethical Conduct, Diocesan Safe Environment Regulations and the Digital Communications and Media Policy via the UKG registration process.
- Background screenings are renewed every 5 years, facilitated by the Office of Human Resources.
Background Screening Employees
- All background screenings are completed as part of the new employee’s onboarding process.
- New employees are required to acknowledge the Diocesan Code of Ethical Conduct, Diocesan Safe Environment Regulations and the Digital Communications and Media Policy via the UKG registration process.
- Background screenings are renewed every 5 years.
Barrier Crimes Preventing Employment or Volunteerism
In its efforts to create safe environments for children and vulnerable adults, the Diocese of Richmond follows the VA Code 19.2-392.02. Individuals who have convictions or indictments which are listed as barrier crimes, may be prevented from employment or serving in a volunteer ministry.
