The diocesan Office of Archives is the repository for historical and administrative records of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond. The records are arranged by collection including, but not limited to: the records and papers of bishops, auxiliary bishops, diocesan offices and consultative bodies; the records and papers of parishes, religious orders, hospitals, schools and other such institutions and individuals significant to the history of the diocese. It should be noted that only records dated prior to the year 2000 are contained in the archives.

Also included among these collections are: photographs; bound manuscript volumes; audio visual materials; printed histories of parishes; programs from significant diocesan and parish events; commemorative cards; maps and blueprints; liturgical and devotional books; artifacts and works of art.

Other reference resources include: national Catholic directories dating back to the mid-19th century; diocesan directories and past volumes of The Catholic Virginian, the diocesan newspaper.
