Catechist Certification

Welcome, Catechists! Pathways: en linea

We are grateful for the many talents and strong witness to the faith you share with your parish and school communities.  We are here for you with practical training, flexible solutions, and ongoing support as you need.

The Office of Christian Formation is pleased to offer Pathways: Delivered supported by the Catholic Faith Technologies online platform.

There are three tiers of Catechist Certification to meet your level of training needs and help you grow in faith, knowledge, and passion:

  • Tier-One Catechist Training: All parish catechists and school religion teachers are required to complete this training within their first year of service.

Courses:

  • Vocation of the Catechist
  • Catholic Approach to Scripture
  • Catholic Tradition

The courses are online, accessible 24/7, and completed at your own pace.

To register for Tier One Training, contact your parish catechetical leader or school religion coordinator.  The total cost of these three courses is $35, paid by your school or parish.

For any questions or assistance during the process, contact [email protected]  This support is bilingual.

Once you have your log-in, you can begin your training at: http://learn.richmonddiocese.org/

Tier-Two Catechist Training: Those with at least one year of experience complete a Methods training to further their catechetical skills in a specific age-group (children, youth, adults, or family).  The course begins with a vision for life-long catechesis as presented in the Directory for Catechesis, and moves on to practical tips, examples, and resources. Catechists choose one of these learning communities to explore best practices, teaching strategies, common challenges and opportunities.

Methods in Children Formation: This course is designed for those who work with learners in preschool through 5th grade, whether in faith formation, children’s liturgy, or sacramental preparation.

Methods in Youth Formation: This course is designed for middle school and high school youth ministry leaders, small group leaders, confirmation and core teams.

Methods in Adult Formation: This course is designed for those who lead bible studies, adult faith sharing groups, prayer groups, RCIA, and other adult-only formation.

Methods in Family Formation: This course is designed for those who work with integrated parent-child programs, such as whole family catechesis, parent-child sacramental retreats, and other community-based formation.

Tier-Three Catechist Training:  This training can begin at any time after Tier-Two Certification is complete and is geared toward catechists who have spent two years or more in the classroom and are emerging coaches/mentors in their parishes or schools, such as RCIA coordinators, First Sacrament retreat leaders, or youth core team leaders. Training consists of ongoing formation tracks chosen from an evolving library of material to help veteran catechists go deeper in one area of their faith.
